NEED OF A CATHEDRAL FOR DUNEDIN
By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, October 25. In opening the Anglican Diocesm Synod this afternoon, Bishop Neville, referring to the building of a new cathedral, pressed the claim for a large building wherein oratories coull be rendered or where people could as semble as members of one empire rather than as members of one congregation. The large attendance at the meetings of travelling evangelists seemed to point to the fact thai true religion must find exp-easion in some spasmodic and emotional way. The drifting of our Wesley an fellowchurchmen from their allegiance is owing to it. This modern condition cialls for a repetition of the ancient provision in the plans of a Cathedral building which included a large nave not used for stated services, but for special occasions, The Dunedin eathedjal ought to have a choir and a sanctuary large enough to receive the ordinary congregation, and have it separated from the nave by a suitable screen. This part of the church should be consecrated an<l set apart for the celebration of sacraments and Divine Worship generally, the nave to be unconsecrated, and great liberty of usage and teaching allowed therein. "I am not one of those who can join in jeremiad," he says, "as to the smallness of the number of young men who attend church services in the several churches of the diocese. There is little, if any, disparity between
sexes."
