In U874 he came to Australia, <and as an observer accompanied Giles in his memorable expedition from South Australia through Central Australia, to Western Australia. He was afterwards presented to Queen •Victoria, the Czar of Russia, and • other rovalties. He received a medal tfrom the Royal Geographical Society, and afterwards held lucrative positions in New York. In 1892 he joined an exploring, expedition to the Arctic, and spent two years surveying the Siberian coast. Returning to Western Australia he held various until nis helth failed. A pleasing ceremony took place last Sunday, when Rev Dean. McKenna, presented Mrs Crawford with a purse of sovereigns on behalf •of the people of Tenui, writes a correspondent. 'ln making the presentation Dean McKenna stated that it gave him very great, pleasure to be asked to represent the people of Tenui on the occasion, for he had - known Mrs Crawford to be always willing to assist in any social or charitable undertaking, and he was glad to find the people of the district recognising in such a handsome way Mrs Crawford's many services. If the people of Tenui had reason to appreciate Mrs Crawfords goodness, >so had he, and he was glad of the opportunity of giving expression to his own feeling of thankfulness to her for many valuable services rendered. The preservation was subscribed to by members of all denomina> tions, and in handing to Mrs Crawford the purse of sovereigns the Dean said he also wished to convey to her the best wishes of her many friends in Tenui for her success and happiness in her new home. Mrs Crawford expressed her gratitude for the gift, and her thanks for the good wishes expressed by Rev. Dean McKenna on behalf of himself and her friends in Tenui.
