AEROPLANES IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
There are actually nearly IUO aeroplanes, many of them capable of carrying passengers, in course of construction in.this State (says the "3ydiu>y Daily Telegraph ") A reputable firm proved to the secretary of the Aerial League that in the last 10 days the had sold 180cwt of sheet aluminium for the making of flying machines. This represents a value of £3,024. And the sheeta of aluminium would cover considerably over three acres of ground. A lady has. made an earnest appeal to the secretary of the Aerial League to be allowed to ascend in one of the \ large war kites which the league is preparing an exhibition at the end ■ of this month. Captain Penfold, the well-known aeronaut,, has entered | for aaveral events at the same exhibition. It is a stange fact, Captain Penfold states, that when at au altitude a dog's bark can be heard quite plainly, whilst the talking of a multitude cannot be detected. It is well known to aeronauts that the human voice dues not rise well. Surely, in these days, when aerial matters are so much in the public mind, this forms a strange contradiction of King Claudius' lament in "Hamlet'':— "My words fly up, my thoughts remain below," When crackers are thrown from a balloon, the aeronaut finds that there are two loud reports, the second being the echo from the earth below. And the second appears 1 the louder.
