STRANGLES IN HORSES.
DISEASE PREVALENT IN THE
DISTRICT
Horses in various parts of the disrict are suffering from strangles, q/iite a large number of cases having been reported. is a very contagious disease, effecting only the equine species. It is a bactreinl disease, the special bacterium being a streptoccus. It is characterised by abscesses forming ji different parts of the body, but in a very large percentage cf cases the abecess is confined to the space under the lower jaw. Generally the first appearance of therdisease is a discharge from the nostrils, which has a characteristic yellow tinge. , In some cases the abscesses form in different parts of the body, and there may be a large number of abscesses in different positions. In other cases it may affect the lungs producing septic pneumonia and with j that a septic pleurisy. On post mortem of such a case the chest cavicy will be found to contain a large amount of pus. It is hardly necessary to state that this form is invariably fata], The treatment in ordinary cases—-absces3 under the jaw—is very simple—poultice. In other cases where the abscesses are scattered over the body each abscess should be opened at the lowest point. The ani mal must be kept warm and plenty of nourishing food given.
