"THE KING'S VETERAN GUARD,"

PROPOSED NEW CORPS.

By Telegraph—Press Association. * AUCKLAND, October 16. A movement has been started among the members of the Empire Association resident in Aucklandto form a corps of 100 ablebodied officers and men, to be known as "Tlfe King's Veteran Guard." The proposal was voiced in a paper delivered by Cap!:. C. R. Cholmondeley Smith, late officer commanding Prince Alfred's Royal Light Horse and "C" troop of'H.M. First Regiment of Cavalry, New Zealand, at the last general' meeting of the Empire Ueterans* Association in Auckland.. In this paper Capt. Smith urged that ou* of the 500 empire veterans-now resident in Auckland they should form a company of 100 able-bodied officers and men who for ordei and discipline would" set an example to the younger active corps-ofithe-Dominion. He suggested that the members of the corps should be men who would be able to pay, for there-own uniforms, and that suchi uniforms should be the same as those of the Imperial Vieterans,. namely, blue with red facings,, and a plain field cap for the present,, to be superseded by the Guards'bear skin. Such a corps, Capt.. Smith pointed uut, would be at valuable adjunct to the Auckland Garrison in-time of need, and would gain and keep- the respect of the public,, who would-be naturally proud of the "old guard" as they marched to their post of honour on any public occasion The movement is being taken up with enthusiasm, and in a short time the corps should be fully established.
