MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY.

PROGRAMME FOR NEXT ANNUAL SHOW. A copy of the programme of the Masterton Horticultural and Industrial Society's annual: show to be held in the Drill and Town Halls, on the 2nd March next, is to hand.

The committee show commendable foresight in publishing tha programme so early, as it will enable intending competitors a chance to get their exhibits ready for competi-

tion. Provision is made for professionals and amateurs, and the former are described as persons earning their living by "gardenine or those who employ a professional gardener all the year round, and they are not eligb'le to compete in the amateur class. .Members' tickets are issued at 5s and family tickets at 10s, which entitles the 1 holders to the payment [of entry fees at half rates. Non ■ members pay Is for each entry, and

in children's classes the entries are free. The programme is a long and varied one, containing seven classes and 168 sections, snJ the prizes are first 5s and second 3s, children's 3s and 2s, respectively, except where special prizes are given. An attractive item of the programme is the competition fpr the best kept cottage garden, for Which- substantial prizes are offered, first (Mrs F. C. Vallunce) £5 sa, second (Mrs J. D. Cruickshank) £3 3s, third (Mrs J. Caselbergl £1 13. The conditions are that the section on w.hich the cottage garden stands is not greater than one rood in area and permanently enclosed. The cultivator of the garden is to be engaged in other occupation than the cultivation of his own garden, occasional assistance only to be permisable. Competitors must be members .of the Society, and make at least one ex .hibit at the Show. Judging will be by points, and entries must be in the hands of the Secretary at least 14 days prior to the sh»w. In addition to pot plants, cut bloom, fruit and vegetables, there is a home industries class, and a class fur fancy work. The committee of management and the energetic* secretary, Mr N. H. James, have all arrangements well in hand, and the public may rely uporf having a very attractive shov.
