BOXING.
It is common talk in Melbourne that Tommy Bums will be in Bill Squires' corner when the latter faces Lang at Melbourne next; month. Squires, it was also said, anticipated putting in the. last week or so of his preparation assisted by the exworid's champion. Burns consented to give Lang another match, the event to take place at the Sydney Stadium next month. This is, of course, contingent on Lang beating Squires during Melbourne Cup week. Wenand, who recently won the Amateur Bantam-weight Championship of Australasia for New Zealand, has decided to go over to professionalism, and challenges any Bst 41h man in Australasia.
A 15-rouna boxing contest has been arranged between Hunnings (H.M.S. Prometheus) and "Tim" Traeey (of Wellington) at Wellington on November Ist. Hunnings defeated Turner at Auckland. As curtain raisers to the principal event, Devitt (Wellinton) will box Butcher (Hawke's Bay), Morris (Levin) will meet Spiers (Blenheim), while a third contest will also be arianed. Thus the New York correspondent of the London "Sportsman," writing from New York on August 17th:— "Young Griffo, the Australian, ona of the most marvellous boxars of his day a dozen years ago, is a hopeless wreck from drink and dissipation in Chicago, and an effort is being made to send him to friends in Australia."
The following provisional agree-me-.t has baen drawn up between Jack and James Jeffries for the heavy weight championship of the world:—Form of agreement entered into this eleventh diy of August, 1909, between Jack Johnson, of Galveston, Texas, and James J. Jeffries, of Los Angeles, Cal. It is agreed between these men mutually that they shall box a certain number of rounds, the same to be anywhere from twenty to 100, for the heavyweight championship of the world. Contest to be held before the club offering the best in ducements and mutually agreed udou by the contestants The division of such purse shall be on a basis of either 60 per cent, and 40 per cant, to winner and loser, respectively, or 75 per cent, and w 25 per cent, or winner may be permitted, to take the entire amount. The decision in- this matter to rest with James J. Jeffries. The sum of 5,000d01. each is t3 be posted with Charlas A. Comiskey, of Chicago, as a guarantee of good faith and the fulfilment by each side of the terms of this agreement. Said money to be posted within seventy t*vo hours. Ifc is further agreed that the above named 5,00'0d01. shall operate as a side bet on the result of the contest. It is further agreed that the club will j be selected and mutually agreed upon sixty days from date, at which time all further details will be mutually agreed upon. Contest to take place not later than six months from date of selecting club and the signing of final articles.
