TURF NOTES. (By" Zetland"). The new owner of Merry Christmas has changed the colt's name to Sunny Land. Under thia title he will be raced at the pony meeting at Hutt Park next week. * Mr C. P. Vallance's Simplex scored in the Railway Handicap, six furlongu, at the Otaki meeting yesterday. For some "time the Eton gelding has been trained by J. Hi Pross«r, at Porirua, and thia was ithe .first win under the well-known trainer. Now that Simplex has struck form he may race very prominently

during this season, and the many who appreciate a straight-going owner will be glad to hear of yesterday's win. Sandix is again in work at Opaki, and appears to be sound enough to go on with a good preparation. Pukewai, who was sore after the Levin meeting, last month, has also joined the track workers. The Masterton«owned gelding by Lethe -Waihora, a full brother to Leahora, has been named Critic, and the appellation of Merrie Emerald has been bestowed upon the Merrie England filly in R. Knox's team, Provocation arrived in Wellington from Sydney by Wednesday's boat. It is expected that Mr Bidwill will spell the colt instead of taking him to Riccarton to contest the Derby. At a meeting of the Stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club, this week, it was decided to invite Mr W. E. Bidwill to a complimentary luncheon at Tauherenikau. At the Wellington meeting next week bookmakers are to be allowed to display the odds by meatus of boards. At the last two meetings at Trentham this has been disallowed. Up to th?s week, H. Gray, with eleven wins, head the list of winning jockeys on the flat, while H. Telford was in the lead in obstacle events with eight to his credit. Los Angelos was scratched for the Stewards' Handicap on the appearance t)f the weights. Nautuorm, North East, Penates, Sweet Angelas and Elysian, are among the most fancied candidates at present. Bobrikoff put up a very convincing performance at Napier Park on Wednesday, when carrying the welter weight of 10.4, he ran six furlongs in Imin 14 2-ssec. Interesting work was witnessed at Opaki, yesterday morning. All the work on the ploughed track, which was really in good order. Rose Herald and Lucretius ran six furlories in gnod style, but were not out for time making. Overrate finished in front of Merrie Emerald in a five furlongs sprint, and Merrie Rose (L. Morris) had a bit the best of Moloch (W. H. McKay) in a gallop of nine furlongs. Sir Solo, Embrocation and Franzisca ran a fast half-mile, the first named finishing slightly in front. He is engaged in the Wellesley Staks at Trentham next week. Sunbonnet, and First Consul appeared to in a run of six furlongs. The little mare has only recently been put into work, but may soon strike racing form. Sandix, Full Rate, Merrie Chimes, Aberration, Skye, Mairiwee filly. St. Brandon, Traylock, Nightlight. San Julie, Sealer and Pukewhai, were woiked separately. The majority of them are forward in condition.
