Mr W. J. Dyer, of Clareville, re- J turned home on Tuesday from an ex- j tended trip to England. The Dunedin Presbtery has nomin- I ated the Rev. J. H. Mackenzie, of Nelson, as Moderator of the General Assembly. Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice of New Zealand, has received the honorary degree of Doctor of Law from Manchester University. The many friends of Mrs W. Nation wll be pleased to learn that she will shortly be able to return to her home at Mangamahoe, after undergoing a successful operation at Mrs Denbee's private hospital some four weeks ago. At the Masterton telephone ex- i change, yesterday morning, Mis* j Corbett, who has been transferred to Wellington, was presented with a handsome gold watch, by her fellow employees, Mr S. Inder making the presentation, and referring to the esteem and appreciation in which they have held her. Mr Osborne, engineer at the Wairarapa Brick and Tile Works, met with a painful accident on Tuesday, writes our Carterton correspondent. He was driving the engine, when his left hand got caught in a cog of a wheel. The injury was attended by Dr. Johnston, and as far as can be ascertained from the swollen and lacerated injury no bones appear to .be broken. An old settler of Canterbury has passed away in the person of Mr William Thomas Whiteman.JjJ who arrived at Lyttalton in 1874, by the Isle of the South, the first ship under the Free Immigration Act then in force. Mr Whiteman was nominated by Mr A. Garland, then proprietor of the White Horse Hotel, under engagement to Mr A. G. Howland, as'coach painter, which position he held for fourteen years. Afterwards he resided in Napier, where he held the same position in Mr Faulkner's coach factory. The deceased wasan old man-o'-waramen, He served his apprenticeship to the navy aboard Nelson's old ship Victory.
