MASTERTON RACING CLUB.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the stewards of the Masterton Kacing Club was held on Saturday afternoon l&st. There were present, —Messrs Jas. Macara (chairman), D. Caselberg, D. Donald, A. W. Welch, 0. C. Cooper, W. D. Watson, F. E. Dor set, W. Piatt, R. Buick, W. Cooper, and D. McLachlan. The secietary of the Wellington Racing Club wrote forwarding trainera licenses for H. C. McPhee, J. J. I Cooper, J. Crerar, and an apprentice's license for W. McGrath. / The Minister for Internal Affairs ? wrote forwarding the totalisator per • mit for the forthcoming meeting. The Railway Department notified that the train arrangements for the meeting would be the same as last
j year. I Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn, secretary for the New Zealand Racing Conferenctj, wrote informing the club that J. Laidlaw, bookmaker, had paid his j wagers in full. The treasurer reported a debit bal- . ance at the bank of £39 8s 3d, I Accounts amounting to £39 4s 9d ; were passed for payment. I The following new members were elected*—Messrs Alfred Searle,
Mount Bruce; W. H. Manihera, MasI terton; Rangi Kerehoma, Masterton. ' It was resolved, after some discusj sion, that the charge for admission to the outside gate be Is, ( and to the saddJing paddock 7s 6d- the same as last ye.ar 1 On the motim of Mr Caselberg, ' seconded by Mr Donald, it was decid--led that the fee for bookmakers be 1 on the same terms as last year, viz., 1 £ls for inside, and £lO outside, and ' 10s extra for clerk. | Mr H. Welch, custodian of the Opaki Course, waited on the Stewards | in support of a letter forwarded by him, complaining of the conduct of Mr W. Garrett, one of the Jxainere, ! who he alleged had used abusivve language towards him with reference to the work done on the course. ; |s|Mr Garrett, at the request of the tew ards. also attended the meeting ' and explained the attitude he had taken. He held that he had received j sufficient provocation to warrant his action. j The chairman maintained that the Club should protect their custodian, and it was not right that he should be bullied by everyone. | Mr 0. C. Cooper moved that Garrett be reprimanded, and informed that it is the intention of the stewards to stc.p that kind of thing in future, and that if a recurrence takes place a recommendation will be sent to the Metropolitan Club to the effect that his license be cancelled j forthwith. This was seconded by Mr Buick. 1 Mr McLachlan contended that it was the Club's duty to take a firm • er stand and he moved that a fine of £lO be imposed. Mr Caselberg thought £lO rather much, and suggested that the amount be £5, to which alteration Mr McLachlan agreed, I Mr Cooper said he would withdraw his motion in favuur of the above provided that the portion of it referring to the cancellation of " license be included in Mr McLac! La's motion. This was done, and on the moMon being put to the meeting it was carried.
