NEW ZEALAND MEAT MARKET IN LONDON.
By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, October 2.
A statement in regard to the present position of the New Zealand meat market in London was made by Sir Joseph Ward, in reply to an enquiry from a "Herald" representative yesterday. "The position," he stated, "is certainly not very satisfactory at present. Representations were made to me upon the subject in Londqn, and it was suggested that an improvement might be effected by increased advertising. I did not think, however, that there was much likelihood of tha position being thereby improved, and there was a difference of opinion on the subject, even amongst those who saw me upon the matter, as to the results that would be likely to accrue from such a step, as the quality of New Zealand mutton and lamb is already well known very widely all over ! England. The increased supplies i from other countries, and the large supplies sent from New Zealand within a. certain period, form the cause, in my opinion of the heavy drop in values " As to Jthe remedy, Sir Joseph stated that it seemed that'it could best be effected by regulating the supply of meat at the Zealand end. "The problem," he said, "is how to effect this. I inrormed the people interested at Home that I would be glad to confer with those interested at this end, with the view of seeing whether the supplies could not be regulated, so as to ensure better prices, and this, of course, I will be pleased to do."
