BURNT TO DEATH.

' By Telegi'aph—Press Association. CHKISTCHURCH/October 3. L. Thoi. Painton, 72 years of age, employed by Henry Munweek, fruitgrower, at Papanui, was burnt to death last night. It appears that he lived in a tent in Munweek's orchard. He was last seen alive at 10.30 o'clock on Saturday night, when he had a bottle of whisky in his possession. but was perfectly sober. About 9.30 o'clock this morniing it was discovered that the tent had been destroyed, and Painton's charred remains were found among the debris. It is supposed that the fire was caused by the candle igniting the bedclothes. It is believed that the deceased's wife and family reside in Dunedin.
