ANNUAL MEETING.

Showery weather was experienced for the second day, and the track was heavy. The racing was decidedly interesting throughout. Fivo bookmakers were in attendance, and the sum of £2,973 was put through the totalisator. being an increase of £1,275 over the amount recorded on the second day last year. Results:—

HACK HURDLE HANDICAP, sft sovs, one mile and a haf. N. Baildon's b g Tyrannic, aged, Tyranny Black Jacket, 10 5, C. Cress 1 J. C. Skeet's bm Silken Rein, aged, 9.6, A. McConnon 2 H. Hodges' c g Diplomatic, aged, 10.10, J. Lyford 3

Yosami 9.10, N. Campbell; Lucretius 9.0, A. Watson, also ran. Yosami delayed the start for some minutes. Lucretius led to the stand, where Tyrannic went to the front, and stalling off challenges by Silken Rein and Diplomatic, won by a length and a half. Time, 3min 4 l-ssec.

AORANGI HACK HANDICAP, 45 sovs., four furlongs. Jas. Tilyard's ch m Swallow. syrs, Conqueror Waiwhera, 7.2, H. Kirk 1 W. C. Tully's blk g Purakau, syrs, 9.12, R. Hatch 2 H. Hodge's br c Merrie Christmas, 4yrs, 7.10, Stan Reid 3 Axite 8.0, W. Ayre; Twinkle 7.12, W. Price; Kiltie Lass 7.10, F. Cress; No Trumps 7.10. W. After along delayed stait Kiltie Lass and Purakau were first to show out. They carried on the running to the turn of the straight, where the latter was out in front. Swallow put in a brilliant run at the end, and won by half a length. Time, 54 3-ssec.

MAkTIN MEMORIAL HANDICAP, 100 sovs, one mile. J. Adams' b g Merrie Zealand, aged, Metne England—Zealand, 9.8, W. Young 1 r. Hall's b m Iranui, syrs, 8 11, VV. Ryan 2 F. San Fernando led for nearly three fur • longs, closely accompanied by Iranui. The latter got to the front at the three furlongs post, and half way down the straight, appeared to havo the race won. Merrie Zealand pat in a brilliant run at the finish, and scored by a head. San Fernando was close up third. Time, Imin 53J sec. HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, 50 sovs., about two miles. J. Senorita 11.5, J. Hercock; Monty 10.0, J. N. McGregor; Vagrant 9.10, W. Bromley; Lady Madcap 9.7, A. Watson, also ran. Sir Lethe at ance set out to make the running Monty and Vagrant fell at the first obstacle, the first named being remounted. Sir Lethe was in front all the way, and won by ten lengths from Whipcord, with Hill Lass two lengths away third. Lady Madcap fell at the pnst and rails, and A. Watson received a rather nasty fall. Time, 4min 48sec.

COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, 50 sovs, six furlongs. T. Ray's br g Merrie Land, syrs, Merrie England—Nai Nai, 8.4, F. Ciess 1 I. Freeth's b m Happy New Year, 4yrs, 7.5, L. Traill 2 H. Whitney's c g Bravery, 4yrs, 7.8, N. McDonald 3 Skye 8.5, W. H. McKay; Leahora 7.12. W. Ayre, were the only other starters. Merrie Land was in front from the start, and won by three lengths. Advantage led to the three furlongs post, where she was deposed by Purakau, who won by two legnths from Sherlock Holmes. Time, °lmin 21 l-ssec.

LADIES' NECKLACE HANDICAP,, 35 sovs, seven furlongs Miss White's blk g Black Pearl, 6yrs, Lakeshell-—Victorine, 11.0, R. Mc Dougall 1 Miss Pilmer's b g Sealer, syrs ILB, G. Hirst 2 Mrs Whale's b g Mariones, syrs, 10.7, G. H. Main 3 Whatakura 11.3, L. McDonald; Tray lock 11.2, A. Best; Nightlight 11.0, J. Tilyard; Jet de More 11.0. J. Haxton; Epsom Downs 10.7, R. Vivian, ako ran. Trajlock and Black Pearl ware together in front to the half mile, where the latter drew away. Sealer joined issue in the straight, and in a stirring finish Black Pearl beat him by half a length. Time, lmin 41sec.

HACK SCURRY, of 35 sovs, five furlongs, weight 8.7. Middleton Melrose's br f Magneto, 3yrs, Merriwee—The Brook, W. Young 1 H, Catt's bg Te Utuatu, aged, T. Catt 2 D. H. Riddiford's b g Comethup, Syrs, B. Reardon 3 Musketeer, W. H. McKay; Ranter, F. Cress; Campaign, R. Hatch; Golden Rein, Crawford; Whimbrel, W. Cairns; also ran. Magneto was quickly out from the barrier, and was never caught, winning by two lengths from Te Utuatu. Time, 1 min Bsec. * t "^"~ T ~ NOTES ON THE RACING. Sir Lathe was scratched for the Hurdles, leaving five to go to the posb Tyrannic was made a strong favourite and easily from Silken Rein, who ran better than on the pravious day Lucretius led for haif a mile but then tired. A field of ten lined out for the Aorangi Hack, a four furlot.gs flutter. There was a long delay at the start, but eventually Kiltie Lass and Purakau moved out first. They carried on the running to the home turn, where Purakau was in front. Half-way down Swallow was seen coming through, and in a big finish she beat Purakau by half a length. After the |race Swallow was submitted for sale by 1 auction by Mr J. R. Nicol, and realised sixty guineas, Mr W. C. Tully, owner of Purakau, being the purchaser. The Conqueror mare joins H. Fletcher's team at Tauherenikau.

All the acceptors for!] the Martin Memorial started. San Fernando cut out the running for about three furlongs, and was then joined by Iracui. At the three furlongs post Tramii was in front, and half-way down the home run looked a certain winner. Merrie Zealand then put in his run from the back rank, and amidst great excitement won by a head, Sir" I ;Lethe was made a firm favourite for the Hunters' Steeplechase. He never left the issue in doubt, winning by ten lengths from Whipcord. Monty and Vagrant fell at the first jump, the first-named baing remounted. Lady Madcap turned a somer3o.ult at the post and rails at the back. Sir' Lethe's record this* season is five wins out of five-, starts.

Lsahora, who is not yet ready, was made favourite for the County Hack. Merrie Land at once took up the running and won easily by three lengths from Happy New Year, who found trie distance too far in the heavy going.

Advanage, the expected certainty for the Telegraph Handicap, failed to keep her lead when challenged by Purakau, just before entering the straight. The latter, who races well in heavy going, stayed out the sixfurlongs well. Sherlock Holmes ran into second place with a good late run. Advantage finished fourth. In a field of eight Traylock was made favourite for the Necklace. Black Pearl was in front practically all the way, but entering the straight Sealer caught him, and in a vigorous finish the former won by a neck.

The Merriwee —Brook filly, Magneto, was quickly selected as the best of good things for the Hack Scurry. W. Young got her out quickly from the barrier, and without being fuliy extended won easily? from I'e Utuatu. The Birkenhead— Merganser colt, Whimbrel, made hh firsc appearance in this race, and ran creditably.
