RIVER ENCROACHMENTS.
During the hearing of a case of api peal against land values before the Assessment Court, at Masterton, , yesterday, it transpired that the flood waters of the Waipnua river have broken across the public road and thruugh a portion of the Akura lands occupied by Mr S. Connell, and contiguous to the bridge leading to Mr W. Kummer's property. Shoul d this overflow remain unchecked there is a prospact of the road baing cut through and the southern approach to the bridge damaged. Another danger from -the erosion of river banks may be seen not very far from the Opaki railway station, on the short cut across the Ruamahunga river to the Te Rangitumau Road, not very far from Mr James Burke's farm. The trouble here is cased by the Ruamahanga river en • croaching towards the Government ballast pit, a huge hole excavated, from which to procure gravel, and which has been opened to within a few feet of the river. During a small which took place recently, the water found its way into the pit, and from thence it overflowed across the road and on through the adjacenc property. If some remedial measures are not resorted to, by placing of groynes to deflect the course of the river, very serious damage may accrue to both a public road and private lands.
