PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Oar Resident Reporter). Wednesday. Chatting with Mr J. C. Cooper, the chairman of the Wellington Far mers' Meat Company, this evening, ho informed me that Mr R. D. McKenzie and himself had made a very successful canvass of tne Wangaehu and Upper Opaki districts, and in the short apace of 2| days had placed an additional £1,300 worth of share. "Every farmer visited," said Mr Cooper, "took up shares, which more than exceeded our expectations." Other canvassers are busy, but up to the present Mr Cooper did not know what success they had attained. Several local anglers are preparing to make an ear'y start with rud and line on Friday morning. Messrs J. W. S turton and Co. have a large and varied assortment of seed potatoes ready for the planting season, and farmers in want of any kind of agricultural seed 3 would do well to cali-and inspect the large stock that this well-known firm nave on hand. The appearance of the Main Street of Pahiatua has been greatly improved by the work carried out in the Square, under the auspices of the Beautifying Association. A scries of flower plots are to be made in accordance with an elaborate plan prepared by Mr R. Parker, Borough overseer. In many ways the town of Pahiatua is progressing apace, but an urgently necessary work is the installation of a new telephone system. Under present conditions the exchange is most unsatisfactory, and the system is altogether out of date. Good results would dubtless follow if the Chamber of Commerce made representations in the proper quarter, and asked lot a new and modern installation. The Chamber will meet again on Friday evening, when it is to be hoped the matter will come up for discussion For the position of County Engineer, twenty-one applications were received by the Pahiatua County Council. An appointment has been made, but so far the name of the successful applicant has not been marie public. The Huia (ladies) Hockey Ball is being huld in the Olympic Theatre this evening, and this afternoon a willing throng of workers were busily engaged decorating and preparing the Hall, while the supper tables were quite a picture to look at. Mr J. Vosper, who has been on the indoor staff of the Pahiatua railway station, for the past three years, has been transferred to Nel> son, and will leave here on Friday next. Mr Vosper has made himself very popular during his stay here, and will be greatly missed at aociaj functions.
