Mr P. H. Hickey haa been elected organising secretary of the West Qjast General Union. Mr and Mrs d. W. Deller, of Carterton, who have been on a trip to England, are expected home next week. The death occurred last week of Mr John Duncan, of Christchurch, and one of the firm of P. and D. Duncan, the well known implement manufacturers. Captain T. N. Clarkson, for twentythree years past harbourmaster at Timaru died there on Monday morning. Captain Clarkson, who was over seventy years of age, was recently granted six months' leave of absence owing to ill health. He was born in London, and went too sea when a boy. At the age of twenty he secured his master's certificate. by whom he had a family seven sons and seven daughters. wFor many years captain Clarkson was of sailing vessels trading (Mahout New Zealand, and was altogether twenty-five years in the coast al service. He was always noted as an extremely capable navigator. Prior to succeeding Captain Webster as harbourmaster at Timaru he lias in command of Mr W. C. Turners (of Christchurch) barque Ex- • aminer. a vessel that was wellknown in the intercolonial trade, and is now a coal hulk at Auckland. Captain Cl»rkaon was also in other vessels belonging to Mr Turner. One of Captain Clarkson's sons is a well -known master in the coastal sailing fleet, including the schooner Bell flower, his present vessel, and was formerly in command of the schooner Falcon. The deceased gentleman was the father of Mrs F Dupre, of Mast terton, to whom the sympathy of jjjy a large circle cf friends will be extended.
