The whole population watched the military dirigible balloon Republique passing over Moulins at the rate of 25 miles an hour. When nine kilometres north of the town the blade of the propeller broke, ripping the envelope, which burst with the report of a cannon. The balloon fell 40 feet, with the occupants—Captain Marshall, Lieutenant Phaul, and two assistants named Reaux and Vincent—whose mangled bodies were found in the car.
