Commander Peary is so exasperated at Dr. Cook's welcome that he has announced that he will not accept' public honours nor attempt to controvert Dr. Cook's claim. He will remain in seclusion at his summer home at Eagle Island in Maine until scientists have examined all the records. Dr. Cook's frankness made an excellent impression in New York, and Commander Peary's abusive messages and jealousy have irritated the public. He is blamed for refusing to allow Captain Bartlett to ac company him over the last one hundred miles ! because Captain Bartlett was an Englishman. He admits that Captain Bartlett did all the rough work.
