THE GRAIN MARKET.

By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, bept. 22.

The wheat market is in much the same position as during the last six weeks. The volume of business is very while prices have not appreciably changed. The first holders of wheat, who are not now many, ara still sanguine that prices will improve latei* in the season. They consequently refuse to accept the price offered by merchants. So far millers have not come on to the market, except to a moderate extent, but it is believed that since few extensive purchases have been made for several months theii stocks are now becoming depleted, and it ij extremely doubtful whether can much longer abstain from purchasing supplies. In the mear.ti re they and the holders appear content to await' developments, with the result that practically no business is passing.

Oats continues to come forward in limited quantities, but the tone of the market is distinctly firmer, a! though there are no quotable change in values during the current week. Several parcels purchased some time ago will leave for London, and it is believed these will practically exhaust the shipments for the present season unless there is an improvement in Home values, merchants recognising that it is impossible to do business with the Mother Country while prices remain as at present.

In barley some active business has been done, a spirit in the mar-, ket being due to the fadt that brewers recognise that the area devoted to barley this, seassn is considerably below last year. Sales made recently have been on a basis of 2s 9d to 3s 3d cn trucks at the country stations.
