THE NEW FARMERS' MEAT WORKS.
THE BATTLE OF THE SITES. THE QUESTION SETTLED AT LAST DIRECTORS DECIDE IN FAVOUR OF WAINGAWA. When the Directors of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company met on Saturday last with refeience to coming to a decision in regard to the matter of a site for tha works it was resolved that another visit be paid to the site to ascertain additional matters connected with the water supply, and that a further meeting be held on Wednesday. In the meantime Mr A. S. Mitchell, the engineer and architect for the proposed works, prepared a lurther report on the Waingawa and Woodside sites, which is as follow : WAINGAWA.
The levels taken here, indicate that at a minimum of cost the water supply from both springs and water race can be brought to the proposed site of the works (between rail and road) by gravitation, thus ensuring a plentiful supply of both filtrml and unfiltered water at all seasons. This site, also lends itself to the distribution of the drainage from the worka by gravitation to either the riverbed or to the flatlands east of the main road. The first coat of construction for water supply and drainage on this site should not exceed £750. WOODSIDE. The only site I consider at all suitable at Woodside is that lying-be-tween Anderson's homestead and the railway line adjacent to the water race an 3 river. If this site is selected (assuming the race is avail able), it will be necessary to coiv struct filler beds or settling tanks foi water purification and maintain those in an efficient state by frequent cleansing The cost of these should not exceed ,£SOO. In regard to the drainage it will be necessary to pump the whola of the drainage from this site to the land at present under offer for drainage purposes. If, however, it were possible to acquire sufficient land south of the Grey town line and east of and distant from the main line about a mile such pumping will be minimised, as a slight fall to this land is evidenced fcty the presence of the water race. The cost of piping to this land will be about £BOO, exclusive of pumping plant. Owing to the nature of the Woodside land it will be necessary to acquire at least 4CO ncres for drainage purposes. Comparing Waingawa and Woodside I estimate that there will be a difference in annuel charges of at least £450 in favour of the Waingawa sits. THE DIRECTOKS' DECISION. The press were not admitted to the meeting of Directors, yester, pree'ded daydover by Mr J. C. Cooper, which commenced in the mort.ing, and was continued till late in the afternoon. After going into the various points relating • to the sites the Directors eventually decided in favour of the Waingawa site. The decision will | be submitted to the shareholders at an early date in a report which will set out fully the reasons for making the selection. This report will be awaited with interest, and will be published in the columns of the Wairarapa Age as soon as it is available
