LONDON MARKETS.
Received September 20, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, September 19. There is a brisk demand for rabbits at about 6d advance. Hares are a" good trade. Sydney are selling at 2s 9d to 3s. At the hide sales the few offered sold at about Jd advance. Basils declined £d First Wellingtons, I6d to 16fd. Frozen meat—Sheep—Canterbury, light and medium, 3£d per lb, heavy 3|d; Southland, none offering; North Island, 3 15-16 d, best brands 3|d. Lambs— Canterbury, light 3 11-16 d, medium 3 15-16 d, heavy 3gd; Southland, 3 16-16 d; North Island, 3|d. Selected brands, 3 5-16 d. Beef, fores 2 11-16J, hinds 3Jd. Australian sheep, heavy 21d, light 3d; lambs unchanged; beef, fores 2§d, hinds 3Jd. River Plate sheep, heavy and light, 3d; lambs, 3d; beef, fores 2 11-i6d, hinds 3 3-16 d. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated Lomlun, September 18th, 1909: The mutton market is firm and supplies arc decreasing. There is an endeavour amongst holders to raise prices of mutton in anticipition oi &mall shipments. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 3£d per lb/ North: Island at 3Jd, and River Plate at B|d. * , The lamb market is weak and stock is heavy, selling at present price of mutton, viz., Canterbury 3£d per lb, and North Is land at 3£d per lb. The beef market is quiet, and there is a fair local demand. New Zealand hinds are quoted at 3fd per lb, and fores at 2£d per lb. The butter market is very firm for best quality, and the market is advancing, steadily. The "Grocer" newspaper advices that forward purchase should be avoided at the pre • sent state of market. The price of New Zealand butter to-day is 118s per cwt. ex Turakina. Australian is quoted at 114s, Danish at 124 a, and Siberian at 106s. The cheese market is dull. There is only a small demand, and buyers are holding back expecting pr ices to go lower. New Zealand is quoted at I 58s, and Canadian at 575. I The hemp market h steady, and no transactions of importance are reported. ' New Zealand good fair grade, on spot, per ton, £26; New Zealand fair grade, on spot, per ton, £25; fair current Manila, on spot, per ton, £25 October-Decem • ber shipments-New Zealand good fair, per ton, £25 15s; New Zealand fair grade, per ton, £24 15s; fair current Manila, £24 10a. Manila output 20,000 bales. The wool market is very firm. There is a general confidence in the maintenance of present prices for some time, and an advance is generally expected. The hop market is very firm, and supplies will be short,
