IRISH LAND BILL

ABACK-DOWN,

NATIONALISTS' DEMAND.

United Pres jAssocntion— uy *.icomc Telegi a?h Copyright.

Received September 17, 8.20 a.m LONDON, September 16.

During the Debate on the recom mitted Irish Land Bill, Mr Birreli, Chief Secretary for Ireland, on the clause forbidding advances in reppect of the purchase of a holding if the tenancy was craated after Ist January, 1908, moved to substitute "15th September, 1909." The Nationalists threatened to abandon the Bill if Mr Birreli persisted with his amendment. Mr Birreli explained that the amendment was in accordance with a promise to Mr W. exChief Secretary for Ireland. He was under the impression that Mr Long's suggestion would affect only a few cases, and made the promise perhaps too hastily. At any rate, if a large amount of business had been going on in bogus tenancies he was ready to consider the position. Finally, Mr Birreli asked leave to withdraw the amendment. Mr G. Wyndham, another former Irish Secretary, asked if it was likely that many jfnew tenancies had been created in Ireland in eighteen months. ;" : There were Nationalist cries of "Yes." Mr Wyndham : It is all a delusion, and the Chief Secretary took frieht with false fire. Mr Birrel: How many do you think there are? Mr Wyndham: The Chief Secretary should ascertain the facts before putting down an amendment. Mr J. Campbell, Conser vative member for Dublin University, commenting on Mr Birrell's surrender predicted that Mr Birreli would never touch lower depths of humiliation. The|amendment was negatived by 179 to 30. Received September 17, 10.50 p.m. LONDON, September 17. The report stage in connection with the Irish Land Bill has been concluded in the House of Commons.
