It was bought by Messrs Pedraizz, of Ross, and Free, of Southbridge (not by Mr Murdoch, as previously stated). The official weight is given as 99ozs 12dwts 12grs Then ugget was exhibited here on Saturday night, large numbers inspecting it. . ...!K§g9 -,;-,? The "Honourable Roddy" will be taken to Christchurch. GREYMOUTH. September 1.3. , The nugget found at Ross is rather larger than an ordinary White Stone turnip, and has a little quartz adhering to it. Weighed on a grocer's scale it went 71b 2oa avoirdupois. The circumstances connected with the discovery are interesting Twenty years ago a miner named Jack McCarthy w as engaged in mining a piece of land a few chhins distant from the eastern boundary of the present Ross Fait Goldfieids, Ltd. One day, when attending to a tail-race, he\ overbalanced himself and broke this neck. Since that time the ground had been shunned by all till a few months ago, when Sharp and Scott commenced operations. Work in virgin ground soon produced lucrative result?, a few small nuggets being obtained. The big nugget itself was discovered some days ago—rumour has it, on Tuesday last Why this exceptionally valuable discovery was kept so quietJJJhas not been made plainly evident, though a statement that there has been a large transaction in shares of adjoining claims bears especial significance. An immediate result of the discovery has been to cause all avail} able land in the vicinity of the find to be pegged out, whilst shares in the Ross Flat Goldfieids, Ltd., have hardened considerably
