FIRES.
By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYTOWN, Sept. 13. Mr John Butler's cottage was burnt down at 12.30 this morning. It was insured for £IOO in the State Fire office. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 13. A two-storey wooden house of seven rooms in Worcester street, which had been unoccupied for three months, and was recently renovated preparatory to reoccupation, was entirely destroyed by fire last evening. An alarm was given, and steam engines, a horsed chemical and a motor chemical, with eighteen men, turned nut. The fire had a strong hold when first observed, and it was some time before a supply of water was available. Chemical engines do little more tnan prevent the spread of a fire r.o adjoining buildings. Water was eventually obtained from the East Christchurch school bath, both the steam engines being used to force the water round the interveni ing block. The house was the property of Mr W. liatt, and was insured in the Standard office. An adjoining boardinghouse had a narrow escape.
