HOCKEY.
A match was played in the Schoolgrounds on Saturday afternoon, be • tween the St. Club, of - Masterton and the St. Matthew's Club, of Hastings. The game, which resulted in a win for the latter by three goals to two, was spoilt by the continual unnecessary appealing and disputing of cfte referee's decision by some of the visitins team. The principal offender was the captain ot the team, and so objectionable did the practice become that the referee issued several warnings* which were not at first heeded. He then stopped the game and appealed to the Hastings captain to conrtol himsell, and some of his players better, and recieving an unsatisfactory answer warned him that if he or any member of hfs team offended again, notwithstanding that they were visitors, he I would put them off the field. This to a certain extent had the desired effect. The local players keenly felt the insult offered the referee, and afcer the game was over Mr Carley (the captain of the local team) appealed to the Hastings captain to . apologise to the referee for his con- | duct. This, however, he refused to dq. Mr Carley thereupon, on behalf of the local players, expressed his keen regret at the unpleasantness that had occurred. But for the fact (that the Hastings players wexe vis - itors and juniors with a limited knowledge of the rules of the game, the referee would certainly have stood at least two of them on the line. 0. Tong scored all the goals for Hastings, and Berry and L. Boyd for Masterton.
