BuXING CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD

KAUFMAN OUTCLASSED,

NO MATCH FOR THE CHAMPION.

Received September 10, 5.20 p.m. SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 9. The contest for the heavyweight championship of the world between Jack Johnson, the present champion, and A 1 Kaufman, took place here to-day. Interest in the fight was slight. It was airanged that if both men were on their feet at the end of the tenth round no decision should be given, but the referee, Mr Edie Smith, promised to give his opinion to the newspapers. Johnson was hooted as he entered the ring and Kaufman cheered. ROUND I.

The champion commenced to punish Kaufman from the start, smiling all the while. Kaufman was slow in his movements. ROUND 11. Johnson held the upper hand. ROUND 111. The Califorpian tumbled when the gong went at the end of the third round, apparently a beaten man. , ROUND IV. Johnson continued to have all the best of the boxing. ROUND V. Kaufman was constantly on the defensive In this round, and waa unable to get at th« champion. ROUND VI. In this round Johnson knocked Kaufman through the ropes. Johnson was complete master of the situation, and had everything his own way. ROUNDS VII AND VIII. Nothing of particular interest occurred in either of these rounds, ROUND IX. Kaufman landed a smashing right on Johnson's stomach. The champion began to hit wild, but steadied himself, and punished his opponent, the crowd cheering Johnson. ROUND X. At the end of this round the men were struggling on the ropes, but did no damage. Newspaper men declared that Johnson clearly outpointed Kaufman in every exchange, and in every round Johnson held the upper hand The Galifornian was unable to land

his blows on his opponent or avoid Johnson's returns. The referee stated that Johnson out-fought, out-hit and out-generalled Kaufman all through the fight. He did not think that Johnson held himself back, because in the ninth round and in some Jof the earlier roonds he tried too finish his opponent. Kaufman was in Mr Smith's opinion, no match for the champion.

A 1 Kaufman is only 23 years of age, having been born m January, 1886. He is 6ft lin in height, and his weight is 13st 31b His career as a boxer began in 1904, when he knocked out Jack Walsh in one round In the following year he met Jack Sullivan, whom he knocked out in one round. In the same year, amongst other contests, he met Jack O'Brien against wnom he put up a good fight, but was knocked out in the ]7th round, On August 27th, 1907, he be-*t Mike Schreck in seven rounds.
