IMPRISONMENT FOR DEBT,

REPORT OF SELECT COMMITTEE.

Received September 10, 9 a.m LONDON, September 9. The report of the Select Committee on Imprisonment for Debt has been laid on the table of the House. The committee reports against complete abolition of imprisonment, as the threat of imprisonment was the only forcible argument in the case of a certain class of debtors. A reduction of the term allowed by the Statute of Limitations to three years instead of six is proposed, and it is recommended that im • prisonment be not permitted in usury and betting cases.
