TURF NOTES.
(By "Zetland.")
The nominations received for the Lower Valley meeting are much more numerous than usual, and the members of the Club will feel justified in altering their meeting from Christmas week to September 30th and October Ist. Quality is fairly well represented in the list, and the racing public may look forward to a most interesting gathering. Mr Shannon's handicaps are due on Saturday, 18th inst., and a good re[.sonse on the part of owners is practically assured.
J Purakau, trained by H. Fletcher, |at Tauherenikau, scored in the Electric Hack at Levin this week in a smart field of thirteen. Pukewai, who was made favourite in the ; Hack Welter, ran very disappointingly, and is evidently not suited to j heavy going. 1 The two Wairarapa trained New Zealand Cup candidates, Blue Ribbon and Merrie Zealand, are continuing ; to do good work on the training j track, and it is quite probable that j both may be among the starters in | the evenful day. j At the Wellington Racing Club's j Spring Meeting to be held next mcnth, a race in which great interest will he evinced is the Champion Plate, of one mile and a quartsr, weight for age. The prize muney is £450, while a cup valued at £lou has been donated by the Club's President, Mr J. B. Harcourt. A good field of the best horses in the country is expected to enter the contest for leading honours. Full Cry, who has been on the disqualified list for some time, has again been put into work. He has joined McLaughlin's team at Greenmeadows.
