GOVERNORSHIP OF THE COMMONWEALTH.
Received September 6, 5.40 p.m. SYDNEY, September 6. The Australian "Star" states that it has excellent authority for announcing that Lord Dudley will retire shortly, and succeed the Earl of Minto as Viceroy of India, and that Lord Plunket will succeed Lord Dudley as Governor-General of Australia.
NO FOUNDATION FOR REPORT.
Received September 7. 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, September 6. An inquiry at Government House elicited the information that there was no foundation for the report of Lord Dudley's retirement. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 6. On making an inquiry at Government House, this evening, a "Her' aid" representative was informed that His Excellency the Governor knew nothing of the rumour as cabled from Sydney to the effect that he would succeed Lord Dudley as Governor General of Australia. Lord Plunket's term as Governor of New Zealand will expire on June 20th of next year. WELLINGTON, September 6. Hon. J. Carroll knows nothing concerning the report from Australia that Lord Plunket is to succeed Lord Dudley as Governor-General of Australia.
