SHIELD WON BY W ELLINUTON

By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, September 5. At Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, in the presence of four thousand spectators, the Wellington representatives succeeded in wresting the New Zealand Hockey Association's championship challenge shield from Auckland, the visitors winning by three goals to two. His Excellency the Governor witnessed the match. The ground played liK ' a billiard table. At the last moment changes had to be made in the Auckland team owing to men being unable to plav, and this seemed to upset thier combination. The visitors had the better of the game, and thoroughly deserved their win. There was not a weak man in the team. Davies, the Wellington inside lef 1- , played a brilliant (jame while the defence of the visitors was superb. In the first spell Smith scored for Wellington, and Brooke-Smith for Auckland, while in the second halt G. Smythe and Davies (Wellington) and Mason (Auckland) secured goals. Mr E. Hay was referee. This is Auckland's first defeat on their own ground for three years.
WANGANUI v. CANTERBURY.
By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHTTRCH, September 4. The inter-Provincial hockey match Canterbury v. Wanganui was played at Sydenham Park this afternoon, in the presence of a far number ef spectators. Canterbury had much the better of the game during the first spelU but the visitors showed better combination, in the latter half, and put up an excellent performance. The game finished— Canterbury 4, Wanganui 2.
