To-day the Australians began a return match against Essex, at Leyton, The weather was bright and sunny, but the wiclcet was soft The Essex captain won the toss, and elected to bat. Fane and Douglas were the first to go out, Cotter and Macartney being entrusted with the attack. Runs came steadily. At 50 O'Connor relieved Cotter. Off his first delivery Fane was caught at second silp, and from his third, without addition to the score. Turner was taken at the wicket. Douglas was careful, and battedj tor 100 minutes, then he played O'Connor on to the wicket. Three for 81. M'Gabey, who was lame, had a man to run for him. Gillingham became partnered with him, and a display of bright batting followed. The century was hoisted in 125 minutes. The wicket after lunch was easy. M'Gahey lasted 125 minutes, and played a strong defensive game, with fine hard off-driving. He retired with 46 to his credit. The partnership put on 67 in 65 minutes after lunch. Four for 160.
