CASTLEPOINT COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Castlepoint County Council was held on Saturday last, all the members being present. The Tinui Branch of the Farmers' Union wrote complaining of the damaged condition of goods landed at Castlepoint, and requesting the Council to try and have this amended. Mr Page wrote applying for permission to erect a notice vboard on the road near the Tinui Hotel.— The request was granted. Mr Cameron, the contractor, applied for two months' extension of time to complete No. 33 contract. The request was granted. A letter was received from Messrs Johnson and Co. advising that the materials required to repair the jetty at Castlepoint could be carried freight free by their steamers. A petitioa was received from settlers interested in a loan of £7OO asking the Council to take charge of the loan and carry out the necessary work of preventing the overflow of the Whareama river. It was resolved to pass a vote of thanks to Messrs Johnston and Co? for their offering to bring material and freight free for a jetty. The Coui'cil agreed to take charge of the loan of £7OO, and carry out the necessary works, provided the ratepayers who signed the petition gave a guarantee that if damages were proved against the Council on account of the work, they would be liable. The estimates of receipts and expenditure for the current year were considered, and adopted, and a general rate of seven farthings in the pound was adopted. The Chairman was authorised to sign the petition held over from last last meeting, praying for a separation of the Wairarapa from Wellington for charitable aid purposes. Amounts amounting to £486 0s lid were passed for payment. The Clerk was directed to make inquiries as to cost of connecting the telephone with the County offices.
