R. Nash, who was recently associated with J. Phillip's Masterton training stables, and rode good work on the Opaki tracks, scored a win at the Richmond (Victoria) meeting last month, when he rode Fleetwing to victory in the Flying Handicap. As Fleetwing was the outsider of the field the win was a meritorious one. The Marton meeting this week was held under most adverse weather conditions, and the course being a sea of mud the contestants had to plough through the going feltock deep. Mr W. D. Watson's speedy Conqueror colt, First Consul, scored an easy win Irom a good field in the Maiden Plate. ,He was turned out in fine condition by 0. McGrath, and was capably ridden by H. Gray, as R. Hatch was unable to ride the weight. Moloch and Merrie Rose had the bad luck to be left at the post in the Marton Handicap, and consequently never reached the fighting rank. Both -will be benefited by the gallop.
Sir Lethe, a double winner at L'aratahi last week, justified the good opinion formed of his capabilities by winning the Hack Steeplechase at Marton from a fine field of jumpers.' Sir Lethe should in due course run well in open company. | Sandstream's party bad a good I win over the San Fran geldiifg's . victory in the Marton Hanidcap, as I they were confident of his winning j chance. He has now earned a penalty of 51b for the New Zealand Cup, and his weight for the big event is now 7st 21b. The next meeting to claim the attention of sportsmen will be the Horowhenua fixture at Levin next week. Several Wairarapa horses are engaged at the meeting. All Red is a firm favourite for the New Zealand Cud. Others well backed last week were Master Soult, Bollen, and Sir Prize. The course committee of the Masterton Racing Club meet on Saturday, when the application by trainers to be allowed to work their charges on the outside ef the course proper will be considered. Tyrannic is proving a very payable racing candidate. In five starts he scored twice at the Woodlands meeting, twice at Riccarton. and yesterday beat a good field in the Hack Hurdles at Marton. He is owned by a Pahiatua resident, and the party controlling his racing evidently believe in the policy of win while you can.
