THE OVERDUE WARATAH.

SEARCH BY WARSHIPS. Received August 31, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, August 30. Replying to an enquiry by Mr Deakin, Federal Prime Minister, as to whether further search by warships for the overdue steamer Waratah is possible, Admiralty officials state that it is improbable that the Admiralty Board will sanction the continued employment of warships, which would mean the suspension of ordinary station work for a long time. The Admiralty had consulted the commander of the Cape squadron (Sir E. S. Poe), who had replied that the area, considered by an hydrographer as the most probable o.ie to contain the Waratah, if she is afloat, is now being closely searched by vessels going to Australia. Fifteen had sailed from Capetown since July 25th. The Admiral adds that the salvage offers a big prize, and he cannot recommend a by warships.
