SPORTING.

RACING.

A horse named Daystar is credited with having made a prodigious jump at Horsham recently. In clearing a 3ft 6in hurdle, from where Daystar took off to where lie landed measured 39ft. If correct this is a record jump. The previous best was Chai>dler, over a water jump in England. The veteran sportsman Eli Jellett was recently interviewed in Victoria, and while acknowledging Carbine's all-round excellence, he said he considered Exile (late Old Stocking) to be one of the greatest horses he ever knew, and Richmond to be the best stayer that ever trod the Australian turf. Exile was by Zauberflote, and raced in the sixties. Originally used as a bullock-drivers hack, Exile showed great form when his true worth was discovered. He had several owners, including Mr Jellett, an American named Courtier, Mr Pat Keighran, and others. Exile won big races at Ballarat, Smythesdale, Bendigo, and other then leading racing centres. Unfancied by Mr Keighran for the Melbourne Cup of 1866, Exile conceded 151b to The Barb and ran Mr John Tait's chamion to a head, while a year later Exile was third in the cup, behind E. de Mester's Tim Whiffler and Queen of Hearts. Exile was considered unlucky not to have beaten The Barb in his Cup, and as a year or so later The Barb was handicaped for the Melbourne Cup by the joint weight sdjusters Messrs W. Leonard, Captain F. C. Standish, and H. Fisher at lOst 71b on a sst 7lb minimum, some idea of Exile's merit may be gauged. Exile won two Ballarat Cups, which race was then run over a distance of 2£ miles and 42 yards. After winning his second Balarat Cup in 18R7, Exile staggered and fell dead on his wayfback to the scale.
