TECHNICAL SCHOOL WOOL CLASSES.
THE QUALIFICATION OF STUDENTS. As a result of the success that has attended the establishment of the ] wool classes under the auspices oi the j Technical School, the Managers of | that institution are now desirous of holding examination classes, recogiJsin x as they do the great value it would be to students, and more particularly those of ambitious inclinations. With this very worthy forward step in view a sub-committee consisting of Messrs E. Feist, W. H. Jackson, and Very Rev. Dean McKenna was„appointed at the meeting of the Managers a month ago, to formulate a scheme In connection with the master. As the result of their deliberations the Director of the Technical College was written to. asking for particulars of the ex- | aminati'jn syllabus in use at their
institution. The reply received, winch was read at last night's meeting of the Managers, stated that the examination classes conducted at tl|eir institution were entirely practical. In the preliminary grade students simply classed according to their spinning counts, in the Ordinary Grade they classed according to counts and to condition, and in the Honors Grade students were expected also to estimate their yields. The j standard was a high one. In order to get a first, class in the Preliminary Grade a student must not make a single mistake 'in his counts, and in the Ordinary Grade must be very little out in his classing as to condition also. The letter also stated that there would probably be instituted this year a short theoretical examination of a simple nature, dealing mainly with the breeds of sheep, cross-brccding and its effect on wools, come backs, meaning of terms, etc. The sjllabus was discussed at length, and it was eventually decided that the sub-committee be instructed to make arrangements for an examiner to conduct examinations on lines similar to the Christchurch syllabus.
