BEAUTIFYING RAILWAY STATIONS.
The appearance of the surroundings ; of railway stations in New Zealand commented on i" unfavourable terms by Mir S. Hurst Seager at a meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association last week, and as a remedy for the existing state of MFdirs he proposed that the Railway Department, should be urged to adopt a plan that had been followed with satisfactory results by some of the railway companies of the United Kingdom. The companies, he said. provided very subsantial prizes for the best kept stations, and as a result of the kean competition among the railway «mployees the appearance of the station yards was mobt pleasing. Any available space in the station yards might be planted wif.h various specimens of the flora indigenous to tlv-< district, and if this plan was carried out systematically travellers from north to south would be able to glean a knowledge 1 of the flora of the country. He ] moved that the suggestion shall' lv; i brought under the notice of the Minister for Railways. Mr A. Kaye said that a similar plan had been attended with satisfactory results'in Victoria and New South Wales. The motion was carried.
