NEXT SESSION.
PROSPECTS OF LEGISLATION. In all probability Parliament will meet for the despatch of business on October 7th. thus giving the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) a few days to look around him after his return from the Old Country. Already there is considerable speculation as to how long the session will last, a very general idea being that the business will be completed just before Christmas. Judging, however, from enquiries made among members of the Ministry, there is nothing to warrant such an assumption, says the "Post." Their attitude may be summed up as follows: — 1 "This is a new Ministry with a new programme, which is already agreed upon and arranged, and which will be announced in the Governor's Speech. The Opposition is—or] says it is—in a fighting mood, and is prepared' to make itself heard at great length, and in considerable volume. That will all take a considerable time, and there is not much time to wase if anything is going to be done between October 7th and December 25th. The Government is going to carry out a portion at any rate, of its legislative programme, no matter how long the session lasts; and that portion will include some measures which are of the greatest importance, and the debate on which will necessarily occupy a considerable amount of time. If any delay takes place it means adjourn- • ing over the Christmas holidays and sitting again until the programme has been carried out." "Even,'J said one Minister, "if we have to sit till June, I want my part of the programme carried out, and I am going to do my best to get it."
