MAST ERTON AND THE FREEZING WORKS.

(To the Editor). Sir, —It must be apparent to every business man of Master ton with sufficient intelligence to avoid standing under a watirspuut ti'l he drowns that something out of the ordinary should be done by the business community collectively towards securing the erection of the Farmers' Meat Works in the vicinity of Masterton. Experience has taught us that Masterton is languishing for industries of ths above character, ai'd unless we get them no. substantial progress can be looked forward to, but the curse of sterility must fall upon the commerce of this town. The fall in prices of our products always affects those centres more acutely which are barren of industries, and Masterton knows only too well that its business heart has been as dead as a salt herring for months past, as the result of the recent depression. Freezing works at the Waingawa, when thoroughly established, would give facilities for two or three hundred men to win their modicum of bread and butter, and Masterton would reap the benefit of their spending power. To get these freezing works the business men must show a real live interest in the company from a financial point of view, and prove that they are prepared to shoulder "a proportion nf the pioneering work. A committee of half a dozen of our leading business men should put before the others "their duties and responsibilities in this matter, after having proved their bona fides by subscribing a good number of shares. Most of us to-day are striving to manage matters mundane on a basis of brute selfishness, and leaving the future to look after itseK. Two or three thousand pounds subscribed by the town of Masterton within the next ten days would mean t .he establishment of works in our midst which would prove of incalculable benefit to the town for all time. Is it possible to hypnotise the business men into doing something sensible right now!—lam, etc., WAINGAWA.
