OBITUARY.
MR JAMES WELCH.
The death occurred at his residence Willow Park, Opaki, yestejrday afternoon, of Mr James Welch, a well-known and highly respected settler. The deceased, who was the eldest son or the late Mr Henry Welch, was 49 years of age, and had been ill tor about three months, heart trouble causing death. ' The late Mr Welch had resided nearly forty years at Opaki, and , was one of the most popular and highlyjrespected farmers in the Wairarapa, being of a bright and cheerful disposition, and endearing himself to ail who came in contact w %th him by his many acts of kindness. His death will be learned with widespread regret, and to the widow and children the deepest sympathy will be extended in theirv bereavement. The deceased had been connected with various public institutions. He was for twelve years chairman of the Opaki School Committee, a steward of the Masterton Racing Club, Vice-President of the ' Carlton Cricket Club, and a well-, known football enthusiast, besides being a member of various other local concerns. The late Mr Welch married the eldest daughter of the late SergeantMajor Chandlers, of Wellington, and there are five children—Mrs H. Giddings, of Pahiatua, Misses Ivy and Lily Welch, and Messrs Bert and K. Welch. i
The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
