(From Our Resident Reporter). Monday. To-morrow evening Surgeon-Cap-tain Johnston will ueliver his sec< n 1 ambulance lecture to the local Rifle Volunteers. The annual re-union of the company will take place on Friday week, when lha presentation of prizes won during the year will be made. I ,undeistand that Mr A. S. Judd has disposed of his cycle business in High Street to a Mr Lyttle, of terton. The new proprietor will take* possession on Wednesday. The trophy for the card tournament amongst the local Friendly Societies is at present on view here. It consists of a frama with a blue velvet background, and there is printed on satin ribbon in half diamond shape the words, "C.F.S. Council Card Tournament," and underneath this are the four aces of a packet of cards, and then below are three silver shields, which is one representing each Society competing. The Oddfellows and DiuiJs open the tournament on Wednesday evening.
News reached here to-day of the death of Mrs Bennett, wife of Mr George Bennett, of Maryborough, and some years ago a resident of this
town. The deceased lady was a daughter ot Mr E. Eagle, senr., of Carterton, ani rad been in failing health for some time. A widower and ! family of three b >ys and ona girl ari left to mcurn lhair loss. An appropriation by s;lj of £3OO in connection with the WaLarapa I Terminating Building Society wil } iake place on August 26th. The annual meeting of the share- j lolders of the Taratahi Co-operative Dairy Company was held this after- ; ioon, Mr W. Fisher, chairman, pre- i liding. The report and balance-sheet vas adopted. Messrs R. McLaren. J. j T. Whi'itaker. and W. F. Bairstow vere elected directors, and Mr C. H. auditor. It was resolved to >pen the iactory on August 25th. The matter of keeping pigs at the 'actory w/s held over for twelve nonths. The following resolution ', vas carried, a copy of which is to be ; orwarded to the other dairy comjanies:—"That this meeting of sup- , jliers of the Taratahi Dairy Company •ecognises that the butter fat competition of the Wairarapa P. and A. society ha 3 been inaugurated in the nterest and for the benefit of the lairying industry, with the intention )f stimulating the breeding and selection of the most profitable breed >f ;oW3 for dairying purposes. In -ecognition of the Society's efforts n this direction, we agree that the ibove cimpany shall donate the sum if not less than Is per supplier to the orize fund ol the butter fat competi,ion of the Jf. and A. Society, prodded other dairy companies will lonate a similar amount."
