FARMERS' CO OPERATVE FREEZING WORKS.

To the Editor. Sir,—With reference to remark* n "Cannie Scot's" letter dated Maserton. August 3rd, and published w, Vugust 12th, I have no doubt thai 'Cannie Scot" considers that to reeze the sheep in fourteen and a lalf weeks, supplies all tne facilities lecessary to a Wairarapa farmer. Veil, Sir, if farmers sent their sheep orward with the same despatch as 'Cannie Scot" sent his letter to iress, the Gear Meat Company would upnlv all the facilities necessary for reezing the output of tde district yhichthev could complete in about iine months. "Cannie Scot" wishes o know the advantages or otherwise .f forming a new company. Well, sir, I will endeavour to point out teveral advantages. First, instead of armers wasting their feed bv havng to keep their stock, until it suits he present companies to send a buyer hrough and remove the tops, with vholesome opposition they will get ;he stock away with much quicker iespatch. If "Cannie Scot" had ihee* farmed In Canterbury, he would know that the Canterbury farmer is able to dispose of his amba as soon as they are prime, which ia between 30 and'3s pounds, [n the Wairarapa where the present :ompanies have the monopoly and buy for weight in reference to quality the farmer has to keep his lambs rieveral weeks longer, which, firstly, is a jreat waste of feed, and the farmer is not able to fatten the ewe after lisposing of the lamb, which in the :ase of old ewes is a serious disadvantage. Second, if farmers freeze on their own account at present the existing companies will not give them the advantage of their brand, which they keep exclusively for theii own meat. On tne other hand the proposed company will give all shareholders and c.i.f. buyers the full benefit of their brand, which will soon become known m the London market. Third, as the proposed company will not be buyers themselves, tbey will supply all the facilities possible to farmers, and c.i.f. buyers who wish to freeze through them. On the other hand the exist ing companies prefer to buy thenv selves, at. as cheap a rate as pos sible, and in order to av3id.com petition they block c.i.f. buyer* which has been proved by them with drawing from the Wairarapa mar ket. In thanking you for space, 1

am, etc., BROTHER SCOT. ■ Masterton August 135b, 1909
