THE SCHOOL MUSEUM.

At the meeting.'of.the Masterton School Committee last evening, Mr' W. H. Jackson, Headmaster of the District High School, in reporting on the new museum now being erected on the site opposite the school, 3tated that the senior scholars had contributed the sum of .£5 tewnrds the purchase of mussum exhibits. This, with the other contributions promi&td and the subsidy, would give the Committee the sum of £37 towards the £SO required. He had also received from the parents of scholars several good exhibits for tli3 natural history section. , The chairman (Mr R. Brown) explained the conditions of the purchase of the collection of reptiles for the museum, particulars of which have 'already appeared in these columns. It was proposed to raise the balance of the purchase money by public subscription, which) he thought should meet with a ready response, considering the great educational value of the collection. Mr Chapman said that good progress was being made with the erection of the museum, the gas being fitted up, and with the exception of the painting there w<is not a great dea? of work required for its completion. The chairman said as soon as the museum was declared open the matter of keeping it open tor the public at certain times would require to be dealt with, and there was also the question of a custoiian for the building. Mr Chapman was of opinion that ' something should be done to provide a fund for meeting the expenditure of preparing; exhibits for the museum as they were received., . \ It was decided to write to the Minister for Mines, asking if the serviced of a geologist could be procured to assist the Committee in classifiyng the exhibits of the mineral section. The question of organising some form of entertainment to raise funds for the museum was discussed at lengih, and it was resolved that no steps be taken until the visiting members had interviewed Mr W. H. Jackson.
