RACING. CANTERBURY RACES. By Telegraph —Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 12. The New Zealand Grand National Meeting was continued to-day, in fine but cold weither. There was some capital racing. There were several spills, but the only rider to sustain an injiny ' was J. Pine, who brake his collar-bcne when Claremont fell at the last fence in the Spreydon Hack Hurdles. The totali&ator investments amounted to £19,848, as against £19,239 last year, and bookmakers were present in strong force. Results: — Hunt Club Cup, about three miles. —Lovell 12.13, 1; Deerslayer 11.3, 2; Stormy Petrel 10.12, 3. Also started —Gammon. Glenagriff, Arty, Matengatenga, Pretoria, Puzzler, and Bess. Wone asily. Besides the placed horses only Bess finished. iMme, 6min 18 3-ssec. \ oumner Handicap, one mile.— Whistlecraft 10.9, 1; Wet Day 9.10, 2; Merry Lass 9.0, 3. Also started--Continuance, Inchbonny, Chiarinian, Bountiful, Sant Rosaleer, Waiata, Rangikapua, and Adjudge. Won easily by" three lengths. Time, lmin 44 4-ssee. Grand National Hurdle Race, about 2 miles—Compass 10.8. 1; Pikapo 9.10, 2; Ben Jonson 11.4, 3. Aljo started—Exmoor, Tauira, Gold Dust, Auratus, Scotty, Lionheart, Kingman, Southern Cross, Showman, Pukenui, and Whatakura. Auratus set out to make the running, and led along the back from Ben Jonson, Compass and Pikopo. Half a mile from home Ben Jonson headed Auratus, but was at once challenged by Pikopo, who led at the last fence. Compass then put m his claim, and won by two lengths, Ben Jonson a length and a half further back. Auratus was fourth. Time, 3min 45 3-ssee. Beaufort Steeplechase, about two miles and a half.—Eldorado 10 5, 1; Capitol 11.5, 2; Wanganui 9.13, 3. Also started—Eurus, Mocassin, Moosken, and Diplomatic. Won comfortably by three lengths. Time, smin 6 2-ssec. Spreydon Hack Hurdle Race, one mile and three-quarters. Folyanthns 10.3, 1; Slaney 9.3, 2; Lapland 10.3, 3. Also started—Claremont, Kelso, Grosvenur, and Blytheboy. Won by two lengths and a half. Time, 3min 23 2-ssec.
Islington Handicap, one mile.--Gwendolina 10.4, 1; Grenadier 10.13, 2; Merrio Zealand 10.7, 3. Also started—North East, St Aidan, Longner, Waikaraka, Lady Disrain, King Post, All Guns, Stratagem, Tikitere, White Cockade, and Monkey Puzzle. Won by a length and a half. Time, lmin 43sec. Woolston Plate, weight 9.0, 6 furlongs.—Zetland, 1; Gold Braid, 2; Equivocate, 3. Also started—Cashier, Pronun, Bravery, Knastikoff, Little Fairy, and Shillelagh Won by thres'quarters of a length. Tune, lmin 18sec.
