A WHITE MAN'S LAND.
UNDER THE EQUATOR. MR ROOSEVELT'S VIEWS. THE TREATMENT OF NATiVES. Received August 6, 8.25 a.m. LONDON, August 5. Ex-Presilent Roosevelt, who has been on a hunting expedition, was entertained at a banquet at Nairo i, in British East Africa. In the course of a speech; Mr Roosevelt said that few people realised that uider the Equator vas n real white man's land. Duri g his journey he had seen large trads of country suitable for settlers, though the coa3t regions and the far interior were only suitable for blacks under whits supervision.
Mr Roosevelt added that black* must De treated without brutality and without sentiment. The latter was probably the most harmful.
