CABLE CHARGES.

GRADUAL REDUCTION FAVOURED. SIR JOSEPH WARD'S VIEWS. tl ,ited Prtßi As ocii,i..h r.y Electric Telegrai h Copyright Received August 6, 8.35 a.m. LONDON, August 5. The New Zealand Premier favoured a reduction of cable charges by stages, as giving confidence to the administrators to gradually lower their charges. Personally ha considered reduction one of the most pressing questions of the day. He disliked anything that might be unfair to cable owners, but it was most regrettable that the people of the great growing overseas Dominions should be kept in a position of isolation through inability to use cables which were so much unoccupied. Sir Joseph Ward strongly favoured State owned cables between' the Motherland and her Dominions, and was hopeful that the existing conditions would not last much longer. He also entirely favoured an All-Red or an all-British steam service. He recognised that many difficulties existed, adding:-" But the more you reduce distances and give people in the Motherland and the new countries the opportunity the greater becomes the tandency to do business mutually."
