IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
THjE dreadnought OFFERS. MISCONCEPTION AND EXPLANATIONS United Press Association-By ElecSric Tticgraph Copyright. Received August 5, 8.55 a.m, LONDON, August 4. Some of the English newspapers are discussing the offer of a Dreadnought as though the Commonwealth desired the battleship when built to be restricted to Australian waters, and to be used independently of auch general imperial measures for defence of the Australian coast as the authorities may advise. Another newspaper error whi:h led to misapprehension is that the Commonwealth desires to shorten the existing arrangement for the subsidising ot an Australian Squadron. In face of this, Colonel Fpxton, the Australian delegate to the Imperial Defence Conference, found it necessary to make known that there was no desire to interfere with the existing arrangement.
