The Australian cricketers began a match at Cardiff against a team representing South Wales. The weather was fine and the wicket easy, and about seven thousand spectators were present. The Australian team consisted of M' A lister, Hartigan, Noble, Gregory, Armstrong, Bardsley, Macartney, O'Connor, Whitty, Carkeek, acd Hopkins. The We'sh team went first to the wickets, and in their first innings made 228 runs. Macartney captured five wickets for 39.

When stumps were drawn for the day the Australians had lost one wicket for 58—Hartigan, not out, 38.
