THE UNEMPLOYED.
By Telegraph—Press Association. \ CHRISTCHURCH, August 2. A deputation from the Unemployed Committee, introduced by Messrs Witty, Davey and Taylor, M's.P., waited on the Hon. R. McKenzie, to-day, and had a long interview. They urged that as 238 men, mostly tradesmen, were unemployed, a commencement should be made to demolish the old building behind the Cathedral in Worcester street, on the site on which it was proposed to erect new Government offices at a cost of £66,000. The work was of a class the tradesmen could easily ! do. They also urged the starting of new Government Buildings at Sydenham and Addington, giving preference for work in the city to married men, and sending single men to the railway works at Broker River. After a lengthy talk, Mr McKenzie stated that it was not proposed to undertake more than half the work at present at a cost of £33,000. He would communicate with his colleagues as to beginning the demolition work immediately. The other matter would have consideration.
