CHEAP CABLES.
SUGGESTION FOR THE DEFENCE CONFERENCE. Received August 2, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, August 1. Mr Henniker Heaton, the postal reiorme, in a letter to Mr Asquith, offers to submit *:o the Defence Conference statistics showing that the sum expended annually by the Home and Colonial Governments on cablegrams for official purposes is enough to pay the interest on any capital expenditure necessary to bring electric messages within reach of the poorest within the Empire.
Mr Heaton's appeal to the delegates for a consideration of this great question.
